Notification for Anma Offshore Wind Yeonggwang Office
In 2018, Anma Offshore Wind Energy established its first Yeonggwang office in Yeonggwang-gun primarily to serve as a communication hub for the local community. Since
That is enough energy to provide power to more than 1.4 million South Koreans every year. Anma Offshore Wind will contribute meaningfully to South Korea’s – and the world’s – ambitious sustainability targets. It will also play a vital role in boosting the local economy, supporting fisheries, providing employment opportunities, and growing positive perceptions around renewable energy.
Located in Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do
Producing 1,400 GWh+ of electricity annually
Supplying electricity to 1.4 million+ South Koreans every year
Eliminating 5.8+ million tons of carbon dioxide annually*
Equivalent to planting and growing 96+ million trees for 10 years*
* compared to coal-fired power plants
Amidst growing public concern around environmental pollution and climate change, the international community ratified the Paris Agreement in 2016, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The Renewable Energy 3020 Implementation Plan is the South Korean government’s pledge to join this global effort. It aims to convert 20% of South Korea’s electricity generation to renewable sources by 2030. South Korean corporations are also doing their part – under the RE100 initiative, they have agreed to replace their entire power consumption with renewable sources by 2050.
South Korea’s message to the world is that transitioning to clean energy is no longer a “nice-to-have”, but a globally recognised responsibility to our planet and to future generations.
Offshore wind is vital to achieving these ambitious sustainability targets. Its high energy density and vast expansion opportunities make offshore wind a crucial renewable resource. Fortunately, the South Korean peninsula’s abundance of coastline makes it a natural fit for offshore wind development – and a promising site for renewable energy’s future and growth.
The 532MW Anma Offshore Wind Project is expected to be one of South Korea’s first utility scale offshore wind projects. Anma Offshore Wind is expected to be a pioneer in the domestic offshore wind industry’s expansion and play an instrumental role in our journey to carbon neutrality by 2050.
Anma Offshore Wind is a 532MW wind farm project located 40 km west of the South Korean peninsula’s southwestern coastline. The project site is positioned next to Anma-do (“do” means island in Korean), in the Yeonggwang-gun.
The area’s annual average wind speeds represent excellent conditions for the development of offshore wind projects. The permitting processes (including the Environmental Impact Assessment and the Maritime Traffic Safety Assessment) are underway and expected to be concluded in early 2023, with construction scheduled to commence in 2024. Trillions of Korean won will be invested during construction, providing a strong catalyst for the local economy.
We expect the project’s commercial operations to begin by 2027, with operational profits to be shared with the community through a local participation scheme.
The following are Anma Offshore Wind’s most significant steps and events so far. Follow our progress as we regularly update the list.
